Cute Little Paper Mache Dragon

I just delivered one of the commissions I mentioned to a very nice couple, Kevin and Brenda.    They seemed very pleased with it.  They liked my little William dragon, the main character of my book, "William's Treasure."   They'd seen William in a window display in downtown Seattle.  Kevin did an extensive search to find me after the display was over.    I think he finally Googled, "paper mache" and found me.  I couldn't sell William since he is from my book.   So I made him a little dragon with the same sort of attitude.     I like the sitting pose, like a dog would sit.   Just thought I'd show you what he looked like.

Thank you as always for looking.

      Hi Suz,
He's about 30" tall if I remember correctly.   He grew a bit.  Once I started with the bent legs, I realized that he needed to be taller.  So I stretched him.   They do like him.  I'm very happy about that.
      See you.

      Hi Karen,
Sometimes when I'm in the middle of the scales I wonder if they add that much, if they are worth the effort.   But I'm always happy I did them when I'm finished.   Thank you for recognizing the work involved.
Thank you for your nice comment.

      Hi Lyman,
Thank you.  This is a nice compliment from someone who doesn't make a lot of cute things.  I always say that I don't get into cute.  But if I'm honest, I guess I do more often than I think.
Hope you are making art yourself.  I love your work.

      Hi Angie,
My "Paper Mache Monsters" book is available in many bookstores although I couldn't say which ones.   You'd have to call or go online if they have a website.  I think you can get most everything you need by looking through the site and the blog.    Let me know if I can help.

      Hello Victor,
It's very nice to meet you. Thank you for your kind words.  I just use old bed sheets for my cloth mache (preferably cotton), the older and more worn the better.   I get them at "thrift" or second-hand stores or from friends.
      Good luck.

          Hello again Victor,
I use taxidermy eyes.  They are glass. The paint won't stick to glass.  I good company for these in the UK is the one below.  Check them out.

Actually I'm not in fifth grade. Very unlikely chance that I'll do it next year because her room will be taken by a first grade class. She's going to have to push a cart around the school. hard to fit large projects on a small cart like that.

Dan, thank you. A couple months ago I volunteered to make a dragon for my daughter's senior banquet. This would have been fine had I a. realized how much time it would take (did I mention I had 8 kids?), or b. had ever done more than the little, dinky whatever that I made in 3rd grade.

I bought your books "Paper Mache Monsters" and "Dragon Maker's Handbook". I also watched and rewatched you create on YouTube.

Brutus/Hilda/Henry/Rufus/Greta/Gienevierre or whatever the name of the day was, is almost finished! I'm painting him/her today and am amazed at the nearly end product. I have had some help from some my amazing friend Laura, and some from the kids, and we have had such fun!

I'm already thinking about what I want to make next. This is totally addicting! I'm really considering a sea monster. I've been looking around and although I know I read it somewhere, but I'm looking for more information on what you used for the outside of the eggs. I'm kinda brain dead at the moment, so I'd appreciate your help.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate you sharing your love of this medium. I home teach my kids and after I gain some experience myself, would like to teach a cloth mache class for our kids.

Thanks again Dan! I'll send you some pictures when I'm finished with our dragon and also pictures of him/her displayed at the castle at the banquet!

      Hi again Ruthie,
You know, over the years people have asked my why I give away (okay, so I sell them too) my techniques.  Well, it's because I get notes like the one you just wrote.   I swear that it's almost as satisfying to hear about someone who is thrilled with what they have made as it is for me to make my own project.   In some ways I feel like a grandparent to the projects my techniques spawn.   So thank you for sharing your experience.  I couldn't be happier for you.   If you are interested, I would love to post photos of your final project on my site (with any caption you like).   If you want to do that just send the photos to dan@gourmetpapermache.com.
Good luck on the last stage.
      Dan
PS.  About the addictive nature of this medium, I couldn't agree more.  That's why my house is full of every manner of strange beast.
